March 27, 2002 - Cowboy's, Fort McMurray, AB Posted By Ibanez I was in attendance at last nights Big Wreck show in a tiny, sweaty, ratty bar called Cowyboys, in a tiny, sweaty, ratty town called Fort McMurray (Alberta, Canada that is). Let me tell all you bastards how great it was. The power was going off and on, Ian's peg pulled from the body of his double-neck Gibson, and the night was littered with omens that some took as both good and evil. Thornley sat on a stool to play inhale after the unfortunate incident with the gibson, which was a first that he likened to "popping a cherry," in Fort McMurray of all places. The crowd was small, maybe two-hundred and fifty people. The tickets were only $10 a piece, but the performance was easily worth $500 a head. They turned this small town upside down for one night, but left an impression that will be raved about for ages. I got a chance to meet Thornley after the show and get my copy of "The Pleasure and the Greed" signed. For looking extremely exaughsted he was more than willing to sign my cd and chat with me ever so politely, though I was intimidated by his prescence, he made me feel at ease. For a few minutes I was in a place of inspiration and admiration that will last my lifetime. Ian Thornley is to be the next great Canadian rock legend, perhaps even the best. If you have not seen them, Big Wreck is the greatest touring live rock show on this planet, and it should be your duty to see them perform, and purchase their cd's, to see that they get the recognition, as musicians and performers, that they so rightfully deserve. |
